Juggling caring responsibilities with paid work is difficult and arduous, and you may feel it difficult to manage. The law recognises this and affords carers certain protections in the workplace. There may be practical measures you can discuss with your employer to make the things more manageable; you could discuss part-time working or job share arrangements with your employer and agree on variations to your contract of employment.
As a carer, you are also entitled to certain legal protections in respect of your employment. Your employer cannot discriminate against you due to your caring obligations to a dependant, and you have a legal right to request flexible working (subject to certain qualifying conditions). Employees have an entitlement to take reasonable unpaid time off to provide care when necessary.
Our Employment Team can advise you of your legal rights as a carer, and provide practical advice on a case-by-case basis.
