Whether you are new to the legal industry or have previous legal work experience, starting a new role as a trainee solicitor can be daunting. Adopting the right mindset for trainee solicitor success is key to navigating the unfamiliar challenges you will inevitably face. The workload can be demanding, and becoming a trainee officially marks the start of the clock ticking to qualification as a solicitor, along with the further responsibilities this brings.

With all of this going on, there is a risk of people feeling like they need to be well versed in the area of law that they are working to justify being there. This can lead to imposter syndrome and also burnout if people try to cram too much in and effectively rush their professional development. It does not need to be this way. Taking a step back and finding the right mindset is a crucial part of being a trainee solicitor.

1. Being realistic

As you may know, training contracts tend to be rotational in that trainees move between departments in the run up to qualification. At Machins, trainees gain experience in four departments, completing four six-month seats. While it will not be possible to master any given area in six months, a good knowledge of the fundamental principles and procedures, which apply in most cases, can be gained. The aim should not be to ‘master’ a practice area, but rather to gain enough insight to make an informed decision about what practice area you want to have a career in.

2. Embrace the unfamiliar

While there may be an urge for some degree of familiarity, which is understandable, appreciating that scenarios and problems will often be unfamiliar as a trainee and a qualified solicitor is key. Although there may be things that will crop up routinely in many cases, no two cases are the same, and an ability to respond to novel developments is needed.

3. Support and mentoring throughout my trainee seat

During my first seat, I have had close contact with the Head of Department and other members of the team, to improve my knowledge of technical legal areas and to build my confidence across a broad range of work. I have regular check ins with my supervisor where he offers advice and guidance on how to deal with queries and tasks on matters that I am dealing with. Each trainee is also assigned a mentor who acts as a support and guide throughout your training contract.

4. Being a student of legal practice

As a trainee you are essentially a student of legal practice. Students need support of teachers and to not be afraid to ask questions. Machins prides itself in supporting the firm’s trainees by steering them in the right direction and enabling them to build confidence

Adopting the right mindset is essential for success as a trainee solicitor. Be realistic about what you can achieve during each seat, embrace unfamiliar challenges, and approach the role as a student of legal practice. Focus on building your skills and knowledge, and use the support available to develop into a confident and capable solicitor.
