Steps to help you in your first week in a law firm
You’ve made it past the interview stages, accepted the job offer, the initial excitement has passed and now the first day of your new job in a law firm is approaching. The nerves might be starting to settle in. Here are some top tips based on my experience to help ensure that your first job in a law firm gets off to a great start!
Step 1 – Dealing with the imposter syndrome
If you find yourself thinking ‘have I somehow duped the interviewers into offering the job’, the chances are that you are experiencing some form of imposter syndrome. Pause and remind yourself that throughout the interview process the various interview panels have seen a potential in you and, amongst all those other applicants, they’ve offered YOU the job. Try to bear this in mind as it can often give you a much needed confidence boost for your first week.
Step 2 – The first day’s commute
Part of a new job is learning your new commute and that can be stressful. You might be unaware of what traffic is like on that route, uncertain of the parking arrangements, and facing the additional pressure of not being late on your first day. Reduce your stress levels on your first day by leaving plenty of time to get to work, and if you get there extremely early, find a spot to park and head for a café.
Step 3 – The canteen is your friend
During your first week spending time in the kitchen, canteen or any common areas as well making that morning brew really helps put you in contact with your new colleagues who may not work within your team or work area. It helps to make yourself known but also allows you to connect with new colleagues. If you’re lucky you might even find some sweet treats there.
Step 4 – Ask questions
You might not feel you want to disturb your colleagues by asking questions or fear looking foolish but the reality is everyone has had their first day and they will be more than happy to help you. In fact questions are very much expected. Questions can be as basic as learning how the printer works to learning how to time record. Remember there is no such thing as a stupid question on your first week, and it’s best to get all of your basic questions out the way early!
Step 5 – Something to look forward to at the end of the week
The first week can be tiring so to keep you motivated, it might be a good idea to plan something that you enjoy doing after your final work day of the week. Perhaps arrange to go for a meal with some family or friends or maybe get a takeaway to treat yourself after a busy first week.
