Woman scarred by hot tea awarded £15,250
A woman has been awarded £15,250 compensation after hot tea was spilt on her in a restaurant.
The 21-year-old Chinese university student had visited the restaurant with some of her classmates. A waiter was carrying a tray of hot tea when he was knocked by another member of staff. Some of the tea spilt on the woman, causing permanent scarring to her thighs, her right arm and lower abdomen.
The pigmentation of her skin was altered and she needed a course of psychological treatment after suffering an adjustment disorder.
At the hospital she was distressed and needed painkillers. She needed to attend the burns clinic on four occasions.
The woman became self-conscious and tearful about the injuries and scarring. She wore extra clothing to hide the affected areas.
As she had not been in the UK for long she hadn’t developed any strong friendships. She was isolated and the incident caused a significant psychological reaction.
She brought an action against the restaurant for failing to take reasonable care over her safety.
The case was settled out of court. The woman was awarded £15,250 for pain, suffering and loss of amenity.
